EMDR Therapy is helping me lessen my anxiety and is building my confidence.

My client was smiling as she said this to me after one of her sessions. Words like these are ones I regularly hear from people who come for EMDR Therapy. I am an EMDR Therapist because I believe in the research and witness results daily in counseling sessions. It always blesses me to hear reports of:

  • Peace
  • Confidence
  • Feeling valuable
  • Loved

My interest in EMDR Therapy began with a personal journey. This process helped me overcome decades of feeling like something bad was going to happen. I walked around for years with a constant sense of dread. So, I decided to go to an EMDR Therapist after a friend recommended it to me. The counselor and I put together a memory timeline, and that is where I remembered that at age 12 I had witnessed a terrible car accident in my neighborhood. After 4 months of weekly sessions, my anxiety reduced dramatically. When it would flare up, I had learned tools such as a calm place, breathing techniques and tapping on myself to bring back the sense of calm. It was as if I could breathe again and live life with more joy.

What is EMDR Therapy? It is proven to be an effective approach in the treatment of trauma. There can be a one-time event in life or a series of events with the same theme such as “I’m not good enough”, or “I’m not safe.” These beliefs are frozen in our brain and affect our present-day functioning.

Using eye movements or bilateral stimulation, EMDR Therapy can lessen or eliminate problems such as:

  • Panic attacks
  • Depression
  • Grief
  • Anxiety
  • Guilt
  • Low self-esteem

Depending on the depth of a presenting issue, therapy for that problem can take less time than talk therapy. Before reprocessing the memories, I focus on positive resourcing to strengthen and stabilize my clients. It is a process that builds upon itself to bring the desired results. It is so satisfying to talk with clients and hear stories of overcoming and victories in their lives.

I am grateful that I found an EMDR Therapist to help me find relief from anxiety. But I am also thankful that it resulted in my pursuing this therapy to help my clients on their journeys to healthy living.
